If presenting live is not an option, many slideware presentations (including PowerPoint) have the ability to record yourself narrating a presentation and save as a video, which can be a nice option. Consider if you might have the opportunity to present to your audience live, utilizing the storytelling techniques (plot, narrative arc, tension). white font on a light grey background).įor a visually impaired person, the option to listen to the content can overcome many visual design issues. This becomes even more important with an audience member who may struggle to distinguish color or picking up subtleties font and background (i.e. If there is one thing that is really important in our visual, we should consider how creating contrast can be a signal to make that one thing very different from the rest. Using contrast of color can be a visual cue to our audience, helping them understand where to look in our visuals. ![]() The purpose of today’s post is to share with you what we’ve found when it comes to designing communications for the visually impaired. ![]() According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 253 million people globally live with some visual impairment, which range from cataracts and glaucoma to complete blindness. Recently, I was guest lecturing for a university audience and received a similar question, but one more broad: how can you incorporate accessibility when designing for those who are not just colorblind, but visually impaired? I set out to do some research on this topic and found out that again, it’s more common that I realized.

![]() Perhaps the most extreme view was voiced by Leonard Bernstein, who devoted a chapter of his 1966 book The Infinite Variety of Music to arguing that there was virtually nothing American about the Symphony. Anyone with a ‘nose’ for these things will detect the influence of America.”īut many observers, nasally challenged or not, have disagreed. Dvořák wrote to a friend in Bohemia that the Symphony “will be fundamentally different from my earlier ones. But it also sounds different from his previous works. Dvořák was not going to change his style in nine months. In the ensuing century, little has changed: the symphony’s popularity has endured, and talking about how much the “New World” Symphony sounded like what American music was before American music started to sound like the “New World” Symphony remains a favorite pastime.Ĭlearly there is a lot of Bohemia in the Symphony. Its reception was a major triumph, and it occasioned much enthusiastic discussion from the musical intelligentsia about just how American it really was. The first performance, in New York on December 16, 1893, was a major event, with a public rehearsal and much advance press attention. He made a special point of having Harry Burleigh, a black National Conservatory student who later became famous as a publisher of spirituals, sing real black music to him.ĭvořák began the symphony in late 1892 and finished it the following May. He would have come to know black music from more varied sources. His knowledge of “Indian” music would have come from published collections, filtered through the ears of white editors. In interviews with New York newspapers, he opined that the music of native Americans and Black people would be the real source of folk music on which to base an American national style. Since Dvořák was a “nationalist” who grounded his own music in Czech folk tradition, he was naturally curious about the folk music of America. Dvořák arrived with his wife and two oldest children in September 1892, and threw himself into teaching, composing, and absorbing America. To this end, a visionary patron of the arts named Jeanette Thurber founded a National Conservatory in New York and engaged Dvořák as its director. ![]() This ultimate piece of Americana actually grew out of an attempt to create an American style of composition. So much in it has been quoted and rehashed that it now sounds like a cliché. Has there ever been a work so beloved, so recognized, and yet so impossible to give a fair hearing as the “New World” Symphony? By the mid-20th century it was so much a part of American culture that it was familiar to people who had never even heard it. Service members (SMs) who are injured on deployment are at risk for myriad long-term health problems that may be ancillary to their physical injury, including high rates of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder, and poor health behaviors (e.g., problem drinking, cigarette and tobacco use, poor sleep quality, and sedentary lifestyle). More research is needed to understand whether treating PTSD and insomnia reduces aggression in veterans. Results suggest that addressing PTSD symptoms as a first treatment target may be more important for decreasing risk for aggression than targeting insomnia. Interaction effects yielded nonsignificant results suggesting that poor sleep did not moderate the PTSD and aggression relation. Results from bivariate analyses indicated that while both PTSD and insomnia severity were associated with higher aggression scores independently, when PTSD and insomnia were examined together, PTSD severity was the only significant predictor of aggression. Linear and logistic regression analyses were used to examine the relation between PTSD and insomnia on aggression. Participants were 143 veterans seeking treatment for PTSD at a VA outpatient PTSD clinic. ![]() Given the high cost of aggression to society and public health, identifying modifiable factors related to aggression, such as insomnia, may guide treatment strategies to help decrease aggression. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and poor sleep have been identified as potential causals factor in aggression, violence, and impulsive behavior. Chemical analysis of the formation shows 10 wt% Fe, primarily in the +2 valence. The reservoir has an estimated storage capacity of 100 giga tonnes of carbon dioxide and comprises layered basalt flows with sublayering that generally alternates between low permeability massive and high permeability breccia. Recently this nonpotable and extensively characterized basalt formation is being reconsidered as a potential reservoir for geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide. For several decades the United States Department of Energy has been investigating Columbia River basalt in the Pacific Northwest as part of its environmental programs and options for natural gas storage. In addition to being globally abundant and vast, deep basaltic lava formations offer mineralization kinetics that make more » geochemical trapping a dominate mechanism for trapping carbon dioxide in these formations. ![]() ![]() In sedimentary saline formations the dominant mechanisms are structural and dissolution trapping, with moderate to weak contributions from hydrological and geochemical trapping where, hydrological trapping occurs during the imbibition of aqueous solution into pore spaces occupied by gaseous carbon dioxide, and geochemical trapping is controlled by generally slow reaction kinetics. The principal mechanisms for the geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide in deep saline formations include geological structural trapping, hydrological entrapment of nonwetting fluids, aqueous phase dissolution and ionization, and geochemical sorption and mineralization. 0000546930 - ZLNQQNXFFQJAID-UHFFFAOYSA-L - Magnesium carbonate USAN - Similar structures search, synonyms, formulas, resource links, and other chemical information. The most difficult challenge is to overcome the low permeability of typical deep-sea sediments, and a variety of approaches are suggested for future research. Our analysis has shown the feasibility of this type of storage, and also emphasizes that escape or leakage from such sites would be negligible. Over the course of the three-year award, our results support an important role for sub-seabed storage in a diverse portfolio of carbons sequestration options. In addition, we are investigating the kinetics of calcium carbonate dissolution in the presence of CO storage in deep sea sediments using a range of approaches including experiments, permeability analysis, and modeling. Our modeling efforts in the first year show that the idea is feasible, but requires more sophisticated analysis of fluid flow at high pressure in deep sea sediments. Through laboratory and modeling efforts, we are studying the flow of liquid carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide-water mixtures through calcium carbonate sediments to better understand the geomechanical and structural stability of the sediments during and after injection. Our goal is to evaluate the basic feasibility of this approach, including an assessment of optimal depths, sediment types, and other issues related to site selection. The first season, while not perfect, was able to a manage a somewhat coherent story condensing around 60 chapters of manga. The story somewhat resembles season 1 Aldnoah Zero - intriguing major plot points outlined but no content to flesh out the story and add impact to the plot's important events.Ī large part of the problem is no doubt due to the shortness of the adaptation. Instead, Root A follows a rather slow-paced development of the supporting cast with intermittent unexplained violence. Simply nothing comes of this original direction despite the many glaringly obvious routes it could add to the series. For all intents and purposes, there are zero differences in plot progression between the anime and manga, besides the fact that the anime development of the characters is far inferior. I was excited for the prospect of a different take on perhaps the manga's weakest arc, but found myself disappointed by the lack of attention to the main character. Kaneki, who should've been the focal point of the so-called "original plot", is left thoroughly underdeveloped and recieves approximately half a minute of air-time per episode. I never got the feeling that there even was an original element to the story. From one episode to the next, content was centered around adaptations of the sidestory in the manga. Studio Pierrot proved itself completely inadequate to handling the franchise and we can only hope that the Tokyo Ghoul series gets the Brotherhood-esque 50-episode reboot with a much better studio.ĭespite a promising opening episode that immediately introduced a difference in story to the manga, Root A never seemed to be interested in actually developing an original story. for the anime to follow, Root A fell inconceivably short in almost all areas it could. For all the hype generated by Sui Ishida creating an original plot line It is a mess of unexplained plot points that insult the complexity of the source material it was adapted from. Root A, however, is trash from an anime-viewer-only perspective and worse than trash if you've read the manga. As a stand alone show, ignoring the quality of the manga, it was pretty good. The first season of Tokyo Ghoul, while certainly not reaching the heights as the manga, was an enjoyable exposition to the series that was able lead newcomers like me to binge read the entire 143 chapter manga in two days. ![]() That would actually be a pretty cool idea. Which, I'm assuming, has a big cult following and it can be a merging of two different generations of horror fans, those who watched the movie when it first came out (I was a part of that, I was 14 when the original came out) and those who want to experience it for themselves for the first time because they may have been too young to watch it. If the idea was to bring the Cabin Fever story to a new generation of horror fans, given that, again, at that point, almost half a decade had passed between movies, then why not just do a re-release of the original. ![]() Quite possibly the most unnecessary horror remake in quite some time. And then, a couple of days after that movie, I end up watching this. I remember talking, in my Mad Money review, about how, while there are still remakes left and right in Hollywood, they aren't as bad or as prevalent now as they were in the past. I think that's just way too short of a time to wait for a remake, to be perfectly honest. Robert H.At the point of this movie's release, 14 years had passed between the original movie and its remake. In order to distinguish individual chromosomes from each other in the complement, many chromosome banding techniques such as C-banding, G-banding, N-banding, Q-banding and R-banding have been attempted. Similarity in morphology among some pairs of chromosomes in cells seems a common feature in many plant species. Before an effective study can take place, clarification of the constitution of the chromosomes in the material aneuploid is a prerequisite. Aneuploids are different from euploids based on the possession of more or less number of chromosomes and are a unique germplasm resource for genetic studies. purpurea seems easy because aneuploid individuals are known to exist naturally in Asteraceae, the family to which E. , triploid plants were obtained by conventional crossing method between diploid and tetraploid plants while aneuploids were obtained by crossing between diploid and triploid plants (unpublished results). purpurea by in vitro colchicine treatment of diploid explants (Nilanthi et al. Purple coneflower ( Echinacea purpurea L.) is native to North America and has important pharmaceutical and ornamental values. By classifying the chromosomes into groups and judging the C-bands, each chromosome could be identified. ![]() ![]() purpurea could be stained with Giemsa to bear C-bands. The chromosome 4 was the only chromosome where intercalary bands were absent. Intercalary bands were found mainly in the long arm of some chromosomes with only two exceptions, the chromosomes 1 and 2 that had intercalary bands on both arms. Telomeric bands appeared most frequently in almost all the chromosomes with only two exceptions, the short arm of the chromosome 9 and the long arm of the chromosome 10. The established karyotype with C-bands showed that all the 11 pairs of chromosomes possessed centromeric bands. The objectives of this study are to develop and evaluate the Giemsa C-banding technique for the purpose of identifying the individual chromosomes in Echinacea purpurea. The karyotype has already been established for purple coneflower ( Echinacea purpurea L.), but due to the high similarity in the morphology of several pairs of chromosomes in this species, it cannot be used to identify individual chromosomes in its own complement. Aneuploid ermpglasm is an important resource for genetic studies and identification of individual chromosomes in the cells of the aneuploid is an important step. |
